Business Loan in Kolkata
Kolkata's traders in Burrabazar and Posta, engineering units in Howrah and leather exporters in Bantala have access to unsecured business loans from banks and NBFCs, with turnover assessed through GST and banking. Family businesses with modest reported profits but strong banking do best with surrogate-income programmes.

The Kolkata market for business loans
Kolkata anchors eastern India's credit market with a large base of public sector and corporate employees, a deep trading and manufacturing community across Burrabazar, Howrah and the industrial belts, and a growing IT sector in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town. Lender competition is somewhat less intense than in Mumbai or Bengaluru, which makes choosing the right lender more consequential for pricing and approval.
Property here has its own conventions: cooperative housing, older buildings in North and Central Kolkata, thika tenancy issues and mutation with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation all affect financing. Our Kolkata desk knows which lenders are comfortable with each, and where a housing finance company is a better route than a bank.
Who borrows in Kolkata
Kolkata's economy spans public sector undertakings, banking and insurance head offices, jute and engineering, leather in Bantala, tea and commodity trading, IT and ITES in Salt Lake and New Town, and one of the country's largest wholesale trading communities. Howrah and Hooghly add a dense MSME manufacturing base.
Lenders in Kolkata
Public sector banks with regional headquarters in Kolkata are strong on home loans and MSME finance; private banks, HFCs and NBFCs operate across the city with growing LAP and business loan books focused on the trading community.

FAQs
Business Loan in Kolkata: common questions
Can I get a home loan for an old building in Kolkata?
Often yes, through HFCs and some banks, provided the title is clear, the building has a completion certificate and mutation is in order. Loan-to-value may be lower for buildings older than 30 to 40 years. We match the property to a lender that funds it.
Are there special loan rates for government employees in Kolkata?
Yes. Several public sector banks with strong Kolkata operations offer concessional home and personal loan rates and higher eligibility to central and state government and PSU employees.
Can a new business get a loan?
Unsecured business loans generally need 2 to 3 years of operating history. Newer businesses can look at government schemes (Mudra, CGTMSE-backed loans through banks), loans against property, or a personal loan to the promoter. We will tell you which route is realistic.
What turnover is needed for a business loan?
Most banks want ₹40 lakh or more in annual turnover for unsecured loans; several NBFCs go down to ₹15 to ₹20 lakh with stronger banking. Loan amounts are usually capped at a multiple of monthly turnover or a fraction of annual profit.
Do I need GST registration?
Not always, but it helps a lot. Lenders use GST returns to verify turnover. Businesses below the GST threshold can still qualify with ITRs and bank statements, typically at lower amounts.
Is a business loan cheaper than a loan against property?
No. Unsecured business loans price at 14% to 24% p.a.; a loan against property runs 8.75% to 12.5% p.a. because it is secured. If you own property and can wait two to three weeks, a loan against property is usually the better choice. The unsecured loan wins on speed and simplicity.
