Hard Enquiry

A lender's check of your credit report when you formally apply, which is recorded on the report.

What it means

When you submit a loan or credit card application, the lender pulls your credit report, creating a hard enquiry that stays visible for around two years. A few enquiries are normal; many enquiries in a short period signal credit hunger and can lower your score and worry underwriters.

This is why applying to several lenders at once is counterproductive. A pre-screen against lender policies, which uses no bureau pull, lets you apply once to the lender most likely to approve.
